With Sean Clifford now with the Green Bay Packers, the talk throughout the spring and summer has been who will be under center. It is now sophomore Drew Allar's job. Allar has been putting in the time to become more confident as he makes the switch from backup to starter. It will be up to third-year offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich to give Allar the confidence to perform. He'll get a test right away with the Nittany Lions playing West Virginia in the first game of the season. What will be incredibly helpful to Allar is the running back duo of Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen, who last season formed the Big Ten's first freshman duo to rush for at least 800 yards each.
This season's "White Out" will be the fourth game of the season, which is against No. 25 Iowa. Many expect the team to be 6-0 when it travels to play Ohio State. The Nittany Lions have three weeks between conference games against Northwestern and Ohio State (including a bye week and non-conference game against UMass), which is plenty of prep time for the Buckeyes. Three weeks later the team will play Michigan at home.
Manny Diaz begins his second year as the defense coordinator after being the head coach of the Miami Hurricanes. With a reputation of being a defensive powerhouse, the Nittany Lions had a Big Ten-best 43 sacks last season, 16 by Adisa Isaac, Chop Robinson and Abdul Carter, all of whom return. Robinson and cornerback Kalen King have the chance to be taken in the first round of the NFL Draft.
